ERA Chassis Ownership Histories - 1934 to date

INTRODUCTION

The most comprehensive information on ERA ownership is in David Weguelin: The History of English Racing Automobiles (1980).

Earlier lists can be found in Rivers Fletcher’s appendix to John Lloyd: The Story of ERA (1947) and in two articles by John Broad in VSCC Bulletin numbers 52 (Autumn 1956) and 55 (Summer 1957). Successive editions of Denis Jenkinson: Racing Car Review (1948-1952) contain considerable information and there are ownership lists in two articles by Doug Nye in Old Motor (June and July 1979).

Since David Weguelin’s book was published in 1980 the ERA Club has set itself the task of maintaining the cars' ownership histories, with changes of ownership being noted on this web page as soon as they are known. The information about some ERAs is more complete than others: continuing uncertainties or puzzles are indicated in the notes that follow this list of owners.

NOTES

R4A – Barry Sargeant acquired the car from Jimmy de Villiers in the early 1960s but the precise dates are not known.

R6B – Robin Hanson appears in some ownership lists but he was only the driver. The car was in fact owned by his patron, Mrs Marjorie Hall-Smith.
Brian Finglass appears in Doug Nye's Old Motor list (June 1979): he was a dealer so it is possible that the car passed through his hands.

R7B – Cyril Paul drove the car in its first few races but Arthur Dobson certainly owned R7B from the beginning.
Ron Linley (omitted from Weguelin) owned R7B in the mid-1950s buying it from an Australian and selling it to a garage owner but he could not recall either name. The garage owner was probably Frank Lockhart who had it in his stock in June 1957 and sold it to Jack Bond.

R11B – Weguelin shows Michael Christie as owning the car between 1954 and 1956 but this is incorrect: he drove it for Peter Bell who remained the owner until it was sold to John Broad in 1956.

G Type - The G type ERA project was sold to the Car Division of the Bristol Aeroplane Company at the end of 1952.
